How to compare health advice online
A practical reading strategy for when two confident pages seem to disagree.
Conflicting health information is unsettling, especially when each page sounds certain. Compare the claims by looking beneath the confidence.
Compare the questions
Two sources may be answering different questions, using different populations, or discussing different kinds of evidence. A dated, transparent source that admits limits is often more useful than a louder one.
Make a small evidence table
- Claim: what exactly is being said?
- Basis: what kind of information supports it?
- Limits: what does the source not tell you?
- Next: what question remains?
